The final week for Breaking News has been about tieing loose ends together and asking for any extra help that we need.
Since this module started I have collected hard news stories for my patch, informative stories and written features. These have all been put to use using either the web or our patch paper using Quark.
I have now got more understanding about how to find news stories and I definately feel that I am more confident when approaching people for interviews.
This module has helped me understand what it is like to work for a real news team and have to meet deadlines which will help when I look for a job after graduation.

I managed to get a great story for this week. I live on Vincent Road in Sharrow and there was a massive fire that occurred at an old mosque on the end of the road. I was able to attend the scene, talk to residence and someone from the fire brigade and also take some pictures using my camera phone. I feel that I acted quickly in this situation and did everything that I should have done as a journalist.
I have written this up as a hard news story. This made front news for the Star so I think we should use it as the front page for the London Road Gazette.
I also attended the lantern festival which took place on Saturday evening. I was able to collect lots of information including quotes from people taking part. I now need to make this into another news story for my patch team.

To help Poonam get the best layout for her restaurant reviews I went along London Road and took pictures of the restaurants using a digital camera. She has now added these to her pieces which will be sent to the Star website. As a part of a team I feel that it is important to help eachother.
I had been able to collect some quotes from a fellow journalism student, Charlotte Abbot, about why she wanted to be a journalist and how she was going to get there. I have now added these to my feature which is almost finished.
I now need to concentrate on finding more patch news stories and putting them onto quark.

I didn't attend the session today as I had a lead on a news story for our patch. After discussing with my patch members, we decided that I should go to that instead and then meet with them afterwards to discuss what they had done in the session and so I could show them what I had done.
The lead was on the Sharrow Lantern Festival. I had heard from a friend, who is a resident of Sharrow, that it occurs every year in April and that they ran meetings about it at the Highfield Trinity Church off London Road.
I was able to talk to Robin Dobson, an artist who takes part in the scheme. He was able to explain to me that the festival is run by a non-profitable organisation called Creative Action Network and it's in order to bring lots of people from the community together through creativity.
The festival was meant to take place on the weekend just gone but had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. It is now taking place on the 19th and I am going to wait until then to write my story so that I can include action from the event and get quotes from people taking part and on-lookers.

Tuesday 1st April (after Easter break) 2008
We were asked to produce a story for the Star website over our Easter break. This had to be something that would not necessarily date. I decided to do a feature on "Becoming a Journalist".
As I found in my research, this is one of the most sought out jobs by graduates so I thought it would be interesting to find out why it is so popular and what it takes to get there. Especially since this is the career that I would like.
I thought it would also be interesting for the Star website because it is written by journalism students so a vast majority of them are going to read it as well.
I have a friend who does online sport journalism for channel five so I was able to interview him over Easter and get lots of nice quotes.
The story is not completed yet as I would like to get some quotes from current journalism students as well. I also feel that the style is a bit scruffy so I want to ask for some help and see how it can be edited to make it better.
The rest of my patch group had prepared stories as well. Poonam had focused on restaurant reviews and Sean had stuck to stories based on sports and especially Bramall Lane. This is good because London Road (our patch area) is full of restaurants and just off of it is Bramall Lane football club. Today we produced a blog page for our patch team so that we can publish our news stories online. The stories that we have already written for our patch can be included on this page however, we may need to edit them to a shorter, more concise version as this is the style used in web journalism.
I have looked at my story about the new Adsetts learning centre and now published this on the blog.
Our patch group has also produced a page for our paper, the London Road Gazette. We used a story that Sean had written about Bramall Lane. The layout is a bit scruffy at the moment so we plan to go back to this and make it better, giving it a more professional feel.
